What is split-cane?
Put simply - bamboo or more specifically, Tonkin Bamboo (Arundinaria amabilis) is grown in a small area by the Sui River in Guangdong Province in China. During the Chinese trade embargo in the 1950's, bamboo became incredibly scarce and the advancement of modern materials effectively ended an industry started by a gunsmith, Samuel Phillipe in 1846.
There are a few craftsman in the UK who still practice this art in a small industry kept alive by a passion resulting from the unique nature of bamboo and it's perfect suitability for rod-making.
